Paris Fashion Week’s spring/summer 2027 season reached its grand finale on Monday 5 October, when Matthieu Blazy presented his second ready-to-wear collection for Chanel at the Grand Palais. It came almost exactly a year after his much-discussed debut for the house, and, as Reuters noted, at a time when his designs have helped keep Chanel’s sales buoyant while other luxury brands struggle.
A set full of birds and a nod to the founder
Guests arrived beneath the glass roof to find a giant moon and a flock of suspended birds, which WWD counted at 95. Blazy told WWD the set was inspired by a village in southern Italy where he holidays, home to a river that shelters migrating birds, and that the theme was freedom. Reuters described the floor as a reflective resin in a “Martian” orange-and-green pattern.
The collection, 83 looks according to WWD, drew on photographs of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel at different stages of her life, from stiff Edwardian tailoring to borrowing men’s suits and finally creating her own tweed suit. In a symbolic touch, the show opened and closed with a model carrying Chanel’s own 2.55 handbag from the house archive, a detail also highlighted by ELLE UK.
Sheer tweed, tiger prints and a stretch suit
The clothes moved between quiet and loud. Reuters reported sheer cream and black skirt suits embroidered with flowers and beads, tweed opened up into a wide windowpane pattern with mesh panels, and a red-and-white tiger-print tweed. After criticism of his boxy shapes, WWD observed more fitted pieces this time, including clingy knits and a pearl-embroidered corset top worn with masculine black trousers. ELLE UK pointed to jackets laced loosely at the back, a playful reference to the corsetry Chanel herself rejected.
Perhaps the most practical idea was a new suit in a stretch fabric that looks like tweed but moves like sportswear. Accessories were just as lively: Reuters listed two-tone pumps in leopard or tiger print and quilted bags in black, burgundy and white, while an ivory coatdress was finished with mismatched gold buttons. Blazy took his bow to Britney Spears’s “Gimme More” and summed up his first year with a modest “It’s a good start.”
The season’s mix of clashing colour and bright detail translates easily into accessories, whether that is a bold multi-gemstone ring, a flash of red with ruby rings, or a pair of statement earrings.
