A Yellow Diamond Sells and Geneva Readies The Bulgari Pink

The autumn jewellery auction season is gathering pace. Results from late September and early October show strong demand for rare coloured stones and well-documented jewels, and Geneva’s November sales are already promising some headline pieces.

A yellow diamond leads in Dallas

According to a Heritage Auctions press release published by InStore magazine, the house’s Fall Fine Jewelry Signature Auction on 28 September raised $7,707,260 from 1,610 bidders. The top lot was a 22.09-carat fancy yellow diamond ring, described as Internally Flawless and from South Africa’s historic Kimberley Mine, which sold for $475,000, close to double its high estimate. Antique and period pieces also proved popular, led by a Cartier Art Deco jadeite and onyx watch from around 1925 at $93,750.

Geneva’s November headliners

Christie’s says its Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva on 10 November will be headed by “The Bulgari Pink”, a 24.00-carat fancy intense pink emerald-cut diamond ring estimated at CHF 10 to 15 million. The auction house notes the stone has stayed in the same European noble family’s hands for more than 70 years and has never been offered at auction before.

Phillips, meanwhile, will hold The Geneva Jewels Auction: VII on 9 November. Its announced highlights include a pearl and diamond necklace once owned by Queen Mary, a 16.40-carat Kashmir sapphire ring, a late 19th-century brooch-pendant with an 18.69-carat unheated Kashmir sapphire (estimate USD 1 to 1.5 million), an unheated 4.74-carat Burmese ruby ring and a 7.96-carat Colombian emerald brooch. The pieces will tour New York, Singapore, Paris, London and Taipei before going on view in Geneva from 4 November.

Why it matters

The common thread is colour and provenance: buyers are paying for natural stones with a clear origin story. If these sales have you thinking about colour, you can browse our own sapphire rings, ruby rings and emerald rings, with no Geneva estimate attached.
