Benedikt Taschen, the publisher behind the famous Taschen art and design books, has put a carefully restored mid-century house in Beverly Hills up for sale. He and his wife, Lauren, are asking $25 million for the Adelman Residence on Summit Drive, a home they spent several years bringing back to its original 1950s spirit rather than tearing down.
A house saved, not replaced
The house was commissioned in 1955 by Isadore B. and Lucy Adelman and finished in 1956, to designs by architects Thornton Abell and O’Neil Ford. The Taschens bought it in 2018 from the original owners’ daughter. According to ARTnews, citing an interview with The New York Times, other bidders at the time wanted to demolish it and build something new, and Benedikt Taschen said the couple wanted to preserve a piece of Hollywood history instead. That choice stands out in a city where many period homes disappear to make way for larger modern builds.
The restoration kept the details that define the house: cork floors, sliding Shoji screens and a small wood-panelled lift. The pool, gardens, guest house and a tennis court were all refurbished too. The court dates from 1928, when the land was part of Charlie Chaplin’s estate.
Living between inside and out
Vanity Fair Italia describes the property as a fine example of Californian modernism, where glass walls, bright rooms and clean lines make the garden feel like an extension of the living space. The plot covers almost an acre and is reached by a long gated drive, with treetop views across the hills. The listing, handled by Drew Fenton and Linda May of Carolwood Estates, gives the house around 5,000 square feet of living space. Robb Report notes that it sits directly opposite the 1930s Selznick estate, which Taschen also owns.
Mid-century design has a lot in common with good jewellery: honest materials, simple shapes and pieces made to last for decades. If that clean, timeless look appeals to you, browse our rings, sculptural earrings or a refined pendant necklace.
