King Charles III has long been counted among Britain’s best-dressed men, and he has worked with fashion houses before on collections shaped by his love of nature and his preference for clothes that last. This autumn he has gone a step further. As Vanity Fair Italia reports, one of his own watercolours is now the signature print of the latest Highgrove x Burberry collection, the fifth capsule created by the British label with Highgrove Gardens, the gardens around the private home of the King and Queen Camilla.
From a painting of Birkhall to silk and wool
The painting shows Birkhall, the King’s much-loved private house on the Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire. According to Burberry, the watercolour is the focal point of the collection’s prints and also inspired its leafy colour palette. It appears in full on a 90cm square silk-twill scarf in sky blue, framed by the House Check, and is knitted into a wool intarsia sweater. Town & Country notes that the Highgrove shop already sells some of the King’s watercolours, but this is the first time his artwork has been used on clothing.
The House Check has been reworked in an exclusive bay green for the capsule, and it runs through cashmere scarves, coat linings and detachable wool-cashmere warmers, some of which carry an appliqué based on the Birkhall painting. Key pieces include the Waterloo trench coat, the Mayfair trench jacket, a car coat and a quilted nylon jacket with corduroy trims.
Craft and the countryside
Sustainability and craftsmanship sit at the heart of the project. Burberry says the main fabric and linings of the trench and car coats are made in England from 100% organically grown cotton gabardine, while the check cashmere scarf is crafted in Scotland. Highgrove Gardens are run by The King’s Foundation, the charity he founded to support nature, sustainability and traditional skills, and today the gardens also host workshops that teach young people heritage crafts.
The result is a gentle hymn to the British countryside in soft greens, misty blues and earthy neutrals, the kind of palette that looks wonderful with gemstones from nature’s own colour chart. Pair a country-style trench with the deep green of our emerald jewellery, add a fresh note with peridot earrings or forest-toned diopside pendants, or echo that sky-blue silk with our aquamarine pendants.
