Throughout her career Jessica Chastain’s copper hair has been as much a part of her red-carpet identity as her gowns. This autumn the Oscar-winning actor, 49, surprised fans by trading it for a bright, warm blonde, and she has since explained both why she did it and how differently people now react to her.
A wig that became a decision
Chastain first stepped out with the new colour at the US Open in New York in September. Speaking to Porter, Net-a-Porter’s magazine, in an interview published on 5 October, the natural redhead revealed that she had never coloured her hair before. Her hesitation, she said, had nothing to do with what others might think; she simply worried that dye might damage it. In the end curiosity won, and she told the magazine that being blonde feels good, while joking that she is not having any more fun than before.
The idea came from work. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, in an episode broadcast on 7 October, she said she had worn a very similar shade in a wig while filming The Off Weeks, a forthcoming Apple TV+ drama, and that wearing it for a few months was a chance to try the look before committing. Vanity Fair Italia notes that her character in the series is called Stella West.
Sweet and demure? Not quite
The most entertaining part of the change, according to Chastain, is other people’s surprise. She told Kimmel that whenever she is a little cheekier than usual, people look shocked, as if a blonde should be gentle and reserved. Redheads, by contrast, are often expected to be fiery, and Vanity Fair Italia suggests that this old stereotype is exactly why her playful side now catches people off guard.
The cut matters as much as the colour. Her jaw-length bob, shaped by her long-time hairstylist Renato Campora, has been styled in several ways: a retro flicked-out version with lifted roots and a bold red lip for the Kimmel appearance, where People reports she wore a black high-neck dress by Silvia Tcherassi, and a fuller, Old Hollywood finish for the premiere of her horror film Other Mommy, released on 9 October.
What a new shade means for your jewellery
A change of hair colour is a good moment to rethink accessories. A short bob leaves the neck and ears on show, so statement earrings suddenly become the focal point. Warm blonde tones sit beautifully next to yellow gold and honeyed stones, so golden citrine earrings or topaz pendants can echo the new shade. If you would rather not choose piece by piece, our jewellery sets pair matching earrings and pendant necklaces for an effortless finish.
