Lourdes Leon, the eldest of Madonna’s six children, turned 30 on 14 October, and her mother marked the day in the way she knows best: publicly, warmly and with plenty of drama. On Instagram, the singer shared a carousel of rarely seen family photos and videos, following her daughter from a newborn in her arms through childhood and adolescence to her first steps as a model and performer.
A birth that made the news
The long caption that came with the pictures was unusually personal. Opening with “Happy Birthday My Lolita!”, Madonna described her daughter’s arrival in 1996 as a fever dream and went on to recall how difficult it was. She wrote that after 18 hours of labour, with the baby stuck and her heartbeat slowing, an emergency caesarean became the only option. She also reminded followers of the helicopters and television crews that circled the Los Angeles hospital at the time, summing it up neatly: the birth was dramatic, just like their lives.
Madonna called their bond “Biblical” and described the two of them as two sides of the same coin. She closed with a nod to “Little Star”, the song she wrote for Lourdes on the 1998 album Ray of Light, urging her never to forget who she is or where she comes from. Lourdes’s father, the trainer Carlos Leon, also posted his own birthday message.
Finding her own voice
Growing up as the child of the world’s most famous pop star has not always been easy, and Vanity Fair Italia notes that the relationship has had its tenser chapters. Even so, Lourdes has carved out her own path in fashion and music. She has modelled for names including Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Mugler, Swarovski and Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, and released her debut single, “Lock&Key”, in 2022. This year she appeared on her mother’s album Confessions II, co-writing the song “The Test” with her, a collaboration Madonna has described as a way of healing their relationship.
