Florence is preparing for a royal wedding with a twist. Dom Rafael de Orléans e Bragança, who is regarded by many Brazilian monarchists as the Imperial Prince of Brazil, will marry the Italian noblewoman Margherita delle Piane on 28 November 2026. The date and city were confirmed on 28 October in a statement on the prince’s Instagram account, which also revealed that the couple had become engaged in Milan and shared the news privately with family and friends back in April.
Who are the bride and groom?
Rafael was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1986 and grew up in Petrópolis, the hill town closely tied to Brazil’s former monarchy. He is the son of the late Prince Antônio de Orléans e Bragança and of Princess Christine de Ligne of Belgium, and he descends from Pedro II, Brazil’s last emperor, who was deposed when the country became a republic in 1889. After studying engineering in Rio, he built a career in business, including years at the drinks company AmBev, and later moved to London.
Margherita, born in Genoa in 1989, comes from two old Italian families: the Delle Piane of Genoa and, on her late mother’s side, the d’Afflitto of the Amalfi Coast. She studied art history at the University of Florence, which helps explain the choice of city, and works in high-end private events. The couple met in London in 2020, introduced through family, and kept their relationship out of the spotlight for years.
A wedding that divides the family
There is a dynastic complication. Brazil has no monarchy and the titles have no legal standing, but within the family the rules still matter. Rafael’s uncle, Dom Bertrand, who heads the Vassouras branch of the imperial house, has said he will not recognise the engagement, because the branch’s rules count only marriages to members of royal houses as dynastically valid. Vanity Fair Italia notes that Rafael could therefore lose his place as Bertrand’s designated successor, with his sister Princess Maria Gabriela a possible replacement. In a May interview with Point de Vue, Rafael spoke warmly of his fiancée while saying the family’s rules must be respected.
Romance, Florentine style
Following the custom of marrying in the bride’s home country, the couple chose Italy, and few cities do a November wedding as beautifully as Florence.
