Most of us know the struggle of finding a bag big enough for everything we insist on carrying. Rosalía appears to have solved it once and for all. The Spanish singer was photographed on the streets of New York this week holding a chocolate-brown leather holdall so large it almost reached her knees, and the fashion press has been asking the same question ever since: what on earth was inside?
A bag made for a film
The piece is not a mass-produced handbag but a custom creation by the independent designer Dana Toder. According to the designer’s own interviews with Vogue and Dazed, it measures roughly one metre long and 60 centimetres high, and it is made from genuine leather printed with a faded collage of photographs. Those images come from Toder’s own archive, from the filmmaker Lili Conzen and from the women who appear in Conzen’s forthcoming short film, Krähe, with pictures spanning the 1970s to the present day.
The film puts women over 70 at the centre of a fashion story, and the bag was first made as a prop for it. Toder has said the idea grew out of the “What’s in my bag?” videos that are everywhere on social media, where someone unpacks their belongings and tells the stories behind them. Here the stories are printed on the outside instead. Toder built it with the help of an 80-year-old leatherworking mentor, Shmulik, and according to Vogue a smaller ready-to-wear version is planned for 2027. Asked by Dazed what Rosalía might have been carrying, the designer joked that there was room for another person.
Ballet shoes that seem to float
The shoes were just as unusual. Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair Italia identify them as platform pointe shoes from Junko Shimada’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection, with transparent heels that create the illusion of walking on tiptoe. It suits a singer who has built so much of her recent style around ballet, from tutus to studded flats. Even so, all eyes stayed on the bag, part of a wider taste among stars for supersized accessories this year.
