A shiny arc hooked over the ear used to mean one thing: an earring. Lately it often means something else. Open-ear “clip” earbuds sit on the outer rim rather than in the canal, and fashion writers have noticed that they look as much like jewellery as like gadgets. Vanity Fair Italia’s Mark Perna put the trend on the map this week; OPPO’s own launch notes and a Guardian Tech Meets Fashion feature back up the same shift from hidden tech to visible accessory.
From Huawei FreeClip to a crowded field
Huawei’s FreeClip, launched late in 2023, helped prove the idea: a C-shaped open-ear bud of about 5.6 grams, later credited with shipping more than four million units and winning a Good Design Award in Japan in 2024. A second generation followed in January 2026. Since then the category has filled out. OPPO has announced the Enco Clip2 with Dynaudio tuning and a liquid-metal, jewellery-like finish in Luminous Gold or Slate Grey. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds On are its first open-ear model; Sony’s LinkBuds Clip, Realme Buds Clip, Soundcore AeroClip and Motorola’s crystal-flecked loop designs sit beside familiar names such as Shokz and Bose. The point for style watchers is simple: these buds are meant to be seen.
When tech borrows from bijoux
That visibility is why brands are treating the ear like a display case. Huawei’s FreeClip 2 collaborations with it’s lava and the Nice jewellery house Les Néréides added swappable charms — hand-painted cherries, irises, petals — that change with an outfit much as earrings do. Motorola paired Bose audio with Swarovski crystals on the arc. Colour stories read like seasonal jewellery boards: luminous gold, titanium gold, lavender, greige. Comfort sells the hardware — nothing presses into the canal, ambient sound stays open, and makers claim long battery life when there is no noise-cancelling stack to power — but the fashion hook is that a clip can sit beside a hoop or a cuff without looking out of place.
There is a trade-off. On a busy train you may hear more of the carriage than of the playlist, and serious audiophiles still reach for sealed in-ears. For everyone else, the clip has become a small public flourish: part ear cuff, part gadget, part daily armour. If you are already dressing the ear with sapphire earrings, amethyst earrings or a slim bangle, the new clips simply join the same conversation — tech that wants to be worn as jewellery, not hidden under hair.
