Pennyblack Returns to Its Roots with a New Look

Pennyblack, the Italian womenswear label that belongs to the Max Mara Group, has opened a new chapter by looking backwards. As Vanity Fair Italia reports, the brand has launched a full rebranding that sets out to reread its historic codes with fresh eyes rather than break away from them. The change began with the autumn/winter 2026 collection and now reaches the logo, the website and the shops.

A name borrowed from the first stamp

The starting point is the name itself. Founded in 1978, Pennyblack takes its name from the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive postage stamp. According to The Postal Museum in London, it went on sale on 1 May 1840 and became valid for postage on 6 May, carrying a profile of the young Queen Victoria and costing one penny for a letter of up to half an ounce. For the brand, that little black stamp has always stood for connection, discovery and movement.

The new identity leans into that idea of travel. The original logo has been redrawn in a cleaner, more essential form, and for the first time it is joined by a postmark-style stamp and a new monogram, a nod to departures and destinations. To mark the moment, the brand sent the Pennyblack Express, a historic train, out of Milan’s Central Station.

An Authentic Journey

The new manifesto, called An Authentic Journey, presents fashion as a personal and free form of expression that should go along with a woman through her everyday life. In practice, that means a wardrobe drawn from the archives and built around key pieces and staples: relaxed tailoring, distinctive outerwear and refined knitwear, in an essential, versatile style meant to last beyond one season.

The shops are changing too. Italian fashion press reports that the redesigned website went live at the end of May, while the new store concept, with textured materials, a warm palette and unexpected touches of colour, has debuted in Lonato, Casalecchio and Assago.

The lesson for anyone building an autumn wardrobe is a simple one: start with a few pieces you love and wear them often. A camel coat and a soft jumper feel finished with a pair of classic earrings or a fine pendant necklace, and a warm stone such as garnet suits the season’s colours. For the journey itself, a practical crossbody bag keeps your hands free.
