People magazine has named Noah Wyle its Sexiest Man Alive for 2026, and the actor’s first reaction was disbelief. Speaking to the magazine, the 55-year-old star of the hospital drama The Pitt said the news sounded like a prank, and that it was his wife, Sara, who persuaded him to accept. In his words, she believes the kind of man, father and husband he is deserves to be celebrated, and she was rather pleased that the title reflects well on her own taste. Lightning striking twice
For many viewers, Wyle has been a heartthrob since 1994, when he first appeared as the young doctor John Carter in ER. Back then he shared a People cover celebrating the show’s leading men with George Clooney, Anthony Edwards and Eriq La Salle. Clooney went on to win the Sexiest Man Alive title twice; Wyle has had to wait more than three decades for his turn.
It arrives at a high point in his career. Playing the weary but devoted Dr Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in HBO’s The Pitt has earned him back-to-back Emmy awards for best actor in a drama series, and a Golden Globe, according to Variety. He described the show to People as the second time lightning has struck in his life. A third season is due in January 2027.
Family before fame
Wyle was candid about how fame changed his life almost overnight after his twenty-second birthday, and about how uncomfortable he still feels speaking as himself rather than through a character. Fatherhood reset his priorities. He told People that when his son Owen was born, he realised life was no longer about him, and soon afterwards he decided to leave ER, returning later for the finale. Today he has three children, Owen, Auden and Frances, and he expects plenty of good-natured teasing from them about the new title.
Wyle also joins a long line that began with Mel Gibson in 1985 and most recently included Jonathan Bailey in 2025. It is a reminder that charm often comes from warmth and ease rather than polish.
