When Barbara Palvin stepped onto the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway in Los Angeles on Sunday 18 October, the applause had an extra layer to it. The Hungarian model, 33, had given birth to her first child, a daughter named Sylvie, with her husband Dylan Sprouse on 7 September, just six weeks earlier. Sprouse watched from the front row as she walked twice: first in a sheer pale pink dress over a matching lingerie set, then in a white embellished corset with snowflake-like wings.
The reality behind the glamour
The appearance was widely celebrated online, but it also prompted a more thoughtful conversation. Many mothers shared pictures of their own postpartum bodies, scars and sleepless nights, worried that such a polished image might feed unrealistic expectations about how quickly women should bounce back after birth.
Palvin answered with honesty rather than defensiveness. In an Instagram post on 22 October she shared a carousel of everyday moments: Sylvie in a tiny outfit with wings, her husband feeding the baby, grandparents assembling furniture, walks with the pushchair, and a backstage shot of herself pumping milk. She thanked the brand for embracing her exactly where she was in her postpartum journey, revealing that the team had sewn nursing pads into her bras backstage, a small reminder of the reality behind all the glamour. She added that it really does take a village, and that she could not have done it without her family and friends.
A choice not every mother has
Palvin was careful to acknowledge her privilege. Going back to work, she wrote, was a choice she was lucky enough to make, and she could not stop thinking about the many mothers in the United States who are expected to return to work six to eight weeks after giving birth, often without paid maternity leave. Mothers, she said, deserve more time, more support and more choices.
She also asked people not to compare. Every postpartum journey is different, and her own daily life looks very different from a runway; some days, simply finding time to shower or eat a meal in peace feels like an achievement. It is a refreshingly grounded message from a model who first walked for the brand in 2012, aged 19.
