Remember the long, slim bags tucked under every arm in the early 2000s? They are back. Vanity Fair Italia names the East-West bag one of the defining accessories of autumn/winter 2026, and the runways agree: British Vogue, Sotheby’s and PurseBlog all point to the elongated shape as one of the season’s most visible silhouettes.
What makes a bag “East-West”?
The name simply describes the direction of the shape. An East-West bag is wider than it is tall, stretching from side to side rather than up and down. As Sotheby’s notes, the idea is far from new: Chanel produced East West versions of its Flap bag in the 2000s, and Hermès has played with longer, lower takes on its classics for years. Fendi’s Baguette, launched almost 30 years ago, is perhaps the most famous ancestor of today’s revival.
British Vogue credits Pieter Mulier’s slender Le Teckel for Alaïa, named after the French word for a dachshund, with sparking the current wave. For autumn 2026 the shape turned up in top-handle, shoulder and tote versions from houses including Chanel, Bottega Veneta and Prada, while Ferragamo made its East-West Hug a key piece of the season.
How to wear it this autumn
According to Vanity Fair Italia, this season’s mood is clean and understated rather than loud and logo-heavy. Think smooth or softly polished leather and suede, slim handles that don’t weigh the shape down, a secure zip and practical inside pockets. The favourite colours are easy ones to live with: black, chocolate brown, tan and burgundy, all of which sit comfortably alongside what is already in most wardrobes.
By day, carry yours on the shoulder or tucked under the arm with a suede jacket, a midi skirt or simply good jeans. After dark, the magazine suggests a smaller version to accompany long dresses or sharp tailoring, where a compact, horizontal line looks polished without getting in the way.
