State dinners usually mean tiaras, anthems and long speeches. On the evening of 12 October 2026 in Astana, Queen Mathilde of Belgium chose a different kind of regal statement: a richly embroidered Elie Saab cape in deep burgundy and diamond earrings crafted in Kazakhstan. The look, reported by Vanity Fair Italia and confirmed by royal fashion diaries covering the visit, was a quiet diplomatic bow to her hosts.
A historic first for European royals
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are on a three-day state visit to Kazakhstan at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev — the first time European monarchs have made an official state visit since the republic’s independence in 1991. After a day that included a welcome at the Presidential Palace, Baiterek Tower and a children’s rehabilitation centre, the couple attended a state dinner at the Reception House of the Presidential Palace, also known as Saltanat Saraiy.
Because the evening was framed as a dinner rather than a full banquet, Mathilde left the tiara at home. She arrived instead in a jumpsuit and cape from Elie Saab’s autumn/winter 2025–26 ready-to-wear collection: intense Bordeaux red, floral sequin embroidery on the front, a lattice pattern and a butterfly with open wings across the back. The Lebanese house is a firm favourite with European royals, and the cape gave the outfit the presence a tiara might otherwise have supplied.
Diamonds with a Kazakh accent
The jewellery carried the evening’s clearest local message. Mathilde wore white-gold and diamond earrings by Saltanat, a jeweller based in the capital whose designs draw on Kazakhstan’s nomadic decorative traditions. Vanity Fair Italia notes that the earrings had not been seen on her before, and that it is unclear whether they were a gift for the visit or a deliberate purchase. Either way, the homage landed. Soft red tones in the outfit also nodded towards traditional Central Asian dress without turning the look into costume. Royal watchers covering day two of the visit (including UFO No More and New My Royals) describe the same Elie Saab cape-and-jumpsuit pairing.
When jewellery does the diplomacy
Skipping the tiara while wearing pieces made in the host country is neat soft diplomacy: respectful, photogenic and easy to read. It is also a reminder that earrings can carry as much meaning as a crown. A simple pendant necklace is another easy way to finish an evening outfit with purpose.
