Twenty years ago today, on 24 October 2006, a 16-year-old from Pennsylvania released an album simply titled Taylor Swift. It held eleven country-pop songs, came with a very mid-2000s cover, and introduced a girl with long blonde curls, sundresses and cowboy boots who wrote about her own heartbreaks with unusual honesty. Two decades and many eras later, the anniversary has sent fans and music writers back to where it all began.
A teenager who knew what she wanted
Taylor Swift grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and in 2004 her family moved to Tennessee to support her music. At 14 she became the youngest songwriter ever signed by the publisher Sony/ATV. Before that, she had a development deal with RCA Records, but she walked away from it after about a year. In interviews from the time, she explained that she did not want to record other writers’ songs or be kept waiting until she was older. Instead she took a chance on Scott Borchetta, who was setting up a brand-new label, Big Machine Records, and who believed in her own songs from their first meeting.
One track on the debut, “The Outside”, was written when she was just 12. It is about feeling lonely and different while everyone else seems to know where they are going, and it already shows the quality that would define her career: turning ordinary, sometimes awkward experiences into songs millions of people recognise as their own.
A slow start, then a long climb
The album was not an instant phenomenon. Vanity Fair Italia notes it sold around 40,000 copies in its first week, then grew steadily thanks to country radio and word of mouth. It went on to spend 24 weeks at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and earned Swift her first Grammy nomination, according to People. The first single, “Tim McGraw”, set the template for the storytelling that followed.
Fans are now watching closely for news of her re-recorded version of the debut, which she has said exists but which, as of today, has no announced release date. Her official website marked the anniversary with confetti and photographs from her different eras.
