Some people discover their love of fashion slowly. Uma Thurman, it seems, found hers at about three years old, standing in front of a shop window. On a recent visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actress shared a childhood story about a pair of red high heels that ended with her sitting in the back of a police car.
Seventy-five cents and a pair of red heels
Thurman explained that her family had just moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, where her father was teaching. As they drove into town, she spotted a shoe shop with red high-heeled shoes in the window, and she could not stop thinking about them. The next day, while her mother was having a nap, the little girl picked up roughly 75 cents from a table and set off on her own to find the shop.
She found it. Once inside, she told the shopkeeper that her mother was on her way, tried the shoes on, decided that they fitted, and handed over her coins. The shopkeeper, sensing that no grown-up was coming, called the police. When the officers asked where she lived, she could not name her street and insisted she could simply walk back. They politely declined.
A ride in the patrol car
What followed was, in her own telling, the most frightening moment of her young life. She sat on an officer’s lap in the back of the car, sure she was being arrested, while the police drove around trying to find her home. From the back seat, nothing looked familiar. The search ended when a long-haired woman in a flowing muumuu appeared in the street, calling out for her child. The officers took one look and realised they had found her mother.
Thurman later wondered why those particular shoes held such a spell over her. Having just moved somewhere new, she suggested she might have linked them with Dorothy’s ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz, and the idea of going home. She also said the episode shows the independent streak she has had since childhood. Her visit to the show came as she returns as Charley in Dexter: Resurrection.
Why red still feels like a statement
There is something timeless about the pull of a bold red accessory, whether it is a pair of patent pumps or a single bright stone. If the story has you thinking about a little colour, our ruby rings and ruby earrings bring a similar warmth, while deep red garnet earrings offer a softer, wine-toned take. To finish the look, browse our women’s bags, which pair well with a statement shoe.
