Kasia Smutniak Wears Earrings Inspired by Nepal

Some jewellery is chosen to finish an outfit. The earrings Kasia Smutniak wore at the Rome Film Festival this week were made to tell a story. The actor and director was in Rome for the premiere of Mustang, her new documentary, and the piece she wore had been designed specifically for that night, with a narrative that reaches back more than twenty years to the mountains of Nepal.

Two open lines and a pair of green diamonds

The earrings, called ECO, are the work of Milena Garatti of the Italian jeweller Garatti, a house that supported the production of the film and counts Smutniak as its face. Their shape looks simple: two curving lines that echo the trails crossing the Mustang district of Nepal, while also standing for two paths through life. According to the brand’s notes, quoted by both Vanity Fair Italia and Vogue Italia, the lines are deliberately left open, as if they continue beyond the jewel itself, a quiet nod to memory, change and continuity.

At the centre of each earring sits a natural Fancy Green diamond, 3.05 carats in total across the pair. Green was picked as a symbol of hope and renewal. It is also an unusual choice: green diamonds are among the rarer colours, and their tint comes from natural processes that alter the stone’s structure over millions of years, which is why they are so prized in high jewellery. If you love that fresh green glow, our emerald earrings, peridot earrings and deep green diopside earrings offer a similar mood.

Black Armani, more Garatti, and a red thread

On the red carpet Smutniak wore an elegant black Giorgio Armani gown, coordinating with her daughter Sophie Taricone, also in black Armani. She added two more Garatti necklaces: one from the Eterea collection, with colourless diamonds and a 2.35-carat Fancy Green stone, and one from the Universale collection, centred on a 3.15-carat green diamond, plus rings from the same line. Sophie, Vogue Italia noted, kept to her own layered chains and colourful hoops.

The most talked-about detail came earlier in the day, though. At the Mustang photocall Smutniak wore an oversized black suit by The Attico and, instead of diamonds, a very fine red cord knotted at her neck. In several spiritual traditions across the Himalayan region, red threads are worn as signs of protection and good fortune. Whether her choice carried that meaning has not been said, but against the film’s setting it hardly looked accidental. It is a reminder that a simple pendant necklace or an emerald pendant can say as much as a red-carpet showpiece.
